Even with the extended runtime of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” it sounds like critics are calling it well worth the extra time. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend admitted he was concerned about the epic length, but that the film more than earns it.
I had reservations about John Wick: Chapter 4’s nearly three hour runtime, but the movie earns it. It’s an epic with smart pacing that never lets the action feel exhausting, and the set pieces are phenomenal. Great cast of series newcomers, but Donnie Yen is the MVP. #JohnWick4 pic.twitter.com/xyMbLXmXUM

Kirsten Acuna from Insider was less thrilled with the long runtime, but commended the film by saying, “This is what we head out to the movies to see.” She also tweeted that Donnie Yen is “an INCREDIBLE addition to the franchise,” which is music to the ears of anyone who is also unhealthily obsessed with the “Ip Man” series (like yours truly).
#JohnWick4 is a bloody good time. Great action and fight sequences. Donnie Yen is an INCREDIBLE addition to the franchise. He’s a highlight of the film. Lots of surprises in this one that’s going to deliver a divisive ending. See this one in IMAX. pic.twitter.com/MMCW54KydQ

Hunter Bolding made the massive claim that the film is “easiest the best in the series,” which is some seriously high-praise considering all three previous “John Wick” films, well, f***ing rule. Bolding’s responses were part of a thread, where he also stated that Donnie Yen steals the show. I mean, duh. He’s Donnie Yen!
John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of the finest action movies ever. My jaw hit the floor at least six times. One section involving a Dragon’s Breath shotgun is just action-movie goodness at its best. Donnie Yen steals the show. Easily the best in the series #JohnWick4 #JohnWickChapter4 pic.twitter.com/VBsZxC6bhu

/Film’s own Vanessa Armstrong agrees with Bolding, going so far as to declare it as “the best movie [she’s] seen in ages!” Considering what a jam-packed year 2022 was of amazing titles, this is some seriously high praise. And obviously, we know and love Armstrong here, so we’re happy to take her word for it.
#JohnWick4 is the best movie I’ve seen in ages!
It’s like a Greek epic that’s, yes, full of unparalleled action (and guns), and the set pieces are phenomenal. But it’s also about relationships and love. What a breathtaking, heartrending story! I can’t wait to see it again. pic.twitter.com/n5cJjWa73B

Eammon Jacobs at Insider wasn’t quite as hyped as some of the other critics, saying, “The exhilarating action is perfectly executed, but the story was dumb — then again, we’re all here to watch Keanu Reeves kick ass, and he does it so bloody well.” As far as I’m concerned, that’s still a hell of a compliment! Jacobs shared additional thoughts in a thread and admitted he had a hard time with the 3-hour runtime. But he did highlight Rina Sawayama, saying she’s so good she deserves her own spin-off. WE’RE HERE FOR IT!
So, #JohnWickChapter4. The exhilarating action is perfectly executed, but the story was dumb – then again, we’re all here to watch Keanu Reeves kick ass, and he does it so bloody well. Fans will love one riotous scene in particular. (Hint: Dragon’s breath shotgun.) pic.twitter.com/YezAZ7stkl

But the positive feedback doesn’t stop there. Folks from publications all over can’t stop talking about how much they enjoyed “John Wick: Chapter 4,” and that’s some exciting news for action fans everywhere. Here are some other critics’ feelings about the film in their own words.
Brawny, bold & badass, #JohnWick4 brilliantly balances vested stakes with an absolutely spectacular, high octane thrill ride. A soaring, searing, scorching chapter in the saga. The wildest time you’ll have at the movies this year. A pure adrenaline rush. pic.twitter.com/eUmJRfnwJw

#JohnWick4 is an action-packed, bloody, kill-fest, and that’s what makes it good! I normally don’t love so much action in my movies but Stahelski makes every frame count. Yes, it’s ridiculous. Yes, it’s video game logic. Yes, it’s extra as hell. Yes, I will be watching again! pic.twitter.com/D56ODsTTcq

#JohnWick4’s Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Rina Sawayama are all scene stealers. Each has so much style, charisma, and talent on display to enrich the film as a whole.
Chad Stahelski also upped his game and droped one of my favorite action scenes, ever. You’ll know it. pic.twitter.com/Id4IvUZBfJ

#JohnWick4 is the most EPIC installment in the franchise! While it is a bit long and suffers from some pacing issues and unnecessary story points, the movie is never boring. Just when things grow stale Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves find a way to suck you back in @JohnWickMovie

#JohnWick4’s three-hour runtime makes so much sense when you’re going *that* hard. The third act alone… just glorious. pic.twitter.com/TDCs74aGV7

Only had a few minor nit-picks. For instance, I didn’t realize the film was nearly 3 hours long. Would’ve liked to see a bit more from Skarsgard here. But overall, #JohnWick4’s a really great time at theaters. This is what we head out to the movies to see.

I’m going to be honest, I spent some time looking for genuinely negative reviews for this film to add some balance, but I genuinely couldn’t find any. (Of course, this will change once the film debuts.) But outside of some folks thinking the film is a little too long for their liking, the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive. It’s always a great day when folks have good things to say about cool movies.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” arrives in theaters on March 24, 2023.
